This year started with a HUGE personal win with my first ever article ‘The 4 rules to break for real career success’ featured in Forbes! Even more exciting is that it has been viewed almost 9,000 times since.

I am a huge believer that success is by design. Funnily enough, it was only when I intentionally shifted the goal of getting featured in Forbes from my wish-list to my to-do list that it actually happened (and surprisingly fast). As with everything, of course – it came down to asking for the opportunity (and realising that it was not just going to land in my lap). The path to purpose and passion is rarely smooth but I hope this inspires you to own your brilliance, dare to dream, and create your own route to success (regardless of the naysayers)!

My top tip for achieving your career goals is….(drumroll please)…

Forget what you’ve been told. Unlearn everything that will not serve you.

I say this because had I stuck to the conventional rules and path or what I felt I ‘should’ be doing, I would not be enjoying a multi-passionate career as a result. When I moved to Australia five years ago I didn’t want to choose between my passions…I wanted to have my ‘career cake’ and eat it too.  This meant the daunting task of turning down lucrative, full time roles in a 9-5 at a time when I had little savings, no networks and little clue about how to make my big dreams work in practice.  But I also knew that unless I could negotiate a part time role, I would never have the time and space to pursue my own entrepreneurial path.  This article is first and foremost about having the courage to follow your heart, instead of your head, so that you can have the fulfilment you deserve.

So here are my five rules to break to achieve real career success:

Rule No.1: Avoid the road less traveled

The Rewrite: Don’t be afraid of creating a new path to success

It is easy to follow a traditional path just because it has worked for most people, but that may fall short of what you really want. Forget what they’ve told you, you actually can have it all. Goals don’t have to fit into a box. You can design the lifestyle you want, with honesty, authenticity and most importantly, hard work.

“Forget what they’ve told you, you actually can have it all”.

Don’t be afraid of creating a new path to success

Rule No.2: Play it safe

The Rewrite: Calculated risks can offer you everything you want

Many people feel successful ‘on paper’ and stuck in jobs that pay too well to leave, even if they are not fulfilling.  They fear having to start over because of the time they might’ve sent creating an old career, or think they will not be as successful doing what they want. Whenever you hit a wall like this, create a plan and execute until your situation changes. Taking calculated risks will pay off in long-term satisfaction.

Rule No.2: Play it safe

Rule No. 3: If no one else has attempted it, it’s not possible

The Rewrite: You won’t know how something will pan out until you do it

You may feel like your goals are to far-fetched because you don’t know anyone who’s ever achieved them. Do not let that discourage you. You are responsible for your goals, so take it upon yourself to see them through. Surround yourself with people who’ve taken risks and gone outside the norm to achieve great things, and fill your lungs with their energy.

“You are responsible for your goals, so take it upon yourself to see them through”.

You won't know how something will pan out until you do it

Rule No. 4: Wait your turn for a promotion

The Rewrite: Give yourself a promotion

You probably wish for a salary bump more often than it is offered or it is “acceptable” to bring up to your boss. Yet, you may find yourself taking on more responsibilities, overworked and earning the same amount. The worst thing is to feel underpaid doing a job you work hard for. So instead of waiting until review time to negotiate a raise, find other sources of income. Diversifying is key to earning as much as you want. When opportunities don’t come your way (like an offer for a promotion), create them.
